Submission Beauty x RIO SS25

On a sunny rooftop in Brooklyn, Submission Beauty rounded out NYFW by joining RIO as they celebrated turning a new leaf; introducing a new era for the brand formerly known as Gypsy Sport. 

A hungry audience of some of New York's most colorful characters cheered on as a cast of pure eccentric excellence danced down the runway. The collection was a reflection of designer Rio Uribe’s deeply personal journey, one that transcends borders and continuously celebrates the diverse cultures that have shaped him both as an individual and a designer. But there was not a hint of nostalgia in sight - this was a purely joyous and forward looking party, complete with a loud soundtrack, loud cheering and loud laughs all around. What a way to close out another fashion week in New York - looking entirely towards the future.

“Rio has been at the forefront of the sustainable fashion movement for over a decade now and is someone I’ve admired for a long time. His commitment to diversity, community and inclusion, as well as creating forward thinking and sustainable fashion is next level. It was a dream to collaborate on this show with a group of likeminded spirits, who are as excited about showing the world a new way to look at responsible and planet-friendly fashion and beauty as we are at Submission."

“For the SS25 Rio show, we worked with the full Submission Beauty collection of products. We love the diverse and inclusive casting and chose to have some models walking nearly barefaced. They’re wearing Balm Shiny to add a gloss to eyelids and lips and our Highlighter Lucid to illuminate cheekbones. I also used Highlighter Deep to add a bit of bronze to their cheeks and eyelids. 

It was important to us to include fresh-faced, barely there makeup in the show, accentuating each models' unique look and letting their natural features shine - quite literally.”

“I chose a range of hues that mirror the colors in the RIO collection - fuchsia pink, holographic silver and gold, all part of our collection of non-toxic and plant-based plastic-free glitter.  There is a futuristic element to Rio’s world, a space vibe that I wanted to feature in the makeup, so I did a number of different sharp graphic lines and shapes on the eyes with different selected colors of our glitter. I didn’t want it to be soft or romantic and I think the graphic glitter eyes are a nod to a punk and slightly aggressive aesthetic - a futuristic interpretation of the edgy and punk spirit of the brand.”

“I also used our glitter on the body, in tones that almost blend with the models’ natural skin tone. The runway was on a beautiful rooftop in Brooklyn and I love the way it makes their bodies shimmer in the sun. It makes them appear to have a sweaty, shiny and almost supernatural look, as if their skin is otherworldly or even slightly alien.”
