FAQ

Where can I purchase Submission products?

Why do clean beauty products cost more?

Our production process is designed to eliminate plastic packaging and ingredients, as well as all toxic materials, which costs more than the mass-market methods used to produce cheap products. Our prices reflect the value and benefits of non-toxic beauty, both to the health of the individual and the community.

Are your products vegan, and what is your policy on animal testing?

Submission beauty products are never tested on animals. All products are vegan with the exception of our glitter, which uses shellac naturally produced by insects.

What does Submission use as a vegan alternative to beeswax?

We use Candelilla wax made from the flowering Candelilla shrub, which acts as a plant-based stabilizer.

Are your products gluten-free?

Yes.

When you refer to your products as plant-based, what does that mean?

All of our ingredients are derived from naturally occurring (non-GMO) plants, flowers, and minerals.

What makes Submission products different from other plant-based cosmetics?

Not only is there no toxic plastic in our products, we’ve also eliminated it from all packaging and shipping materials. Most brands that claim to be certified organic or plant-based still use plastic packaging that can be harmful to both the consumer and the environment.

Why does Submission avoid parabens preservatives?

Parabens are not only a skin irritant, but can cause severe damage to your body, disrupting your hormone balance and contributing to certain cancers and complications with fertility and childbirth. See what other ingredients are on our list.

Without parabens, how do you preserve your products?

We rely on antioxidant ingredients including vitamin E oil (tocopherol) and essential oils. Their preservative qualities are not quite as long-lasting as the chemical ingredients found in mass-market beauty products, but we feel that is a small price to pay for avoiding toxic ingredients.

How long do Submission beauty products last?

We recommend that our products be used within 3 months of opening. Our products are sized to last for roughly that long, given daily use.

Do Submission products need to be kept in a temperature-controlled environment?

We suggest storing our products in a relatively cool and dry environment.

Where do you source your mica from?

We are aware of the exploitative situation surrounding mica mining, particularly in India, which is why we source our mica ethically from within the US.

Can I use your products if I have a nut allergy?

Because we use almond oil in our Balm Shiny, you may wish to avoid using it if you have a severe nut allergy.

What does TÜV OK Biodegradable certification mean?

Our glitter’s level of biodegradability is based on its certification from TÜV Austria, an independent body that tests and certifies materials with regard to their potential harm to life and the environment. The glitter’s specific certification is for freshwater biodegradability, meaning that it reaches 90% biodegradation (organic breakdown into its natural components) within 56 days in freshwater at an average temperature of 21°C (~70°F). In comparison, plastic glitter can take centuries to break down in nature, depending on its composition. Our unique serial number for the certification (s-code) is S0933 and you can search for it here.

PACKAGING

Do you use any form of plastic in your containers or shipping boxes?

No, Submission avoids using plastic in any form—at all costs.

Is your packaging recyclable?

Yes, all Submission packaging is recyclable. See how to recycle each item here.

Is your packaging biodegradable or compostable?

All of our cardboard materials are 100% recycled, recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable. We avoid all plastic and glue, and use paper tape. Our glass and tin are recyclable. Read more about our packaging and how to recycle each item here.

Why do the caps on Highlighter Deep and Highlighter Lucid look different?

In an effort to further conserve resources and reduce waste we’ve updated our cap design, as currently seen on our highlighters. These new caps feature only a thin coat of plastic-free paint on the top surface of the raw tin cap. As a result of this ultra-efficient design, you may notice that the caps scratch more easily, and the paint can rub off if it comes in contact with alcohol-based products such as some hand sanitizers. We encourage you to consider this not as a flaw, but as confirmation that the packaging is made without unrecyclable plastics and forever chemicals found in the majority of consumer products. With that in mind, please handle the product accordingly to avoid any inconvenience.

Are your shipping labels sustainable?

Yes. Read more about our packaging here.
