As The Tide Turns

“in some magnetic way I move in the university of the waves.”  from “The Sea” by Pablo Neruda (1904-1973)

When community builds around a love of nature, a powerful bond is created.

In this story, Submission explores a sisterhood brought about by the culture of surfing and their love of the serene and sublime great blue.

LIV @livbennetttt

My name is Liv, I am a little shy and a Virgo. I am 27 in 23 days. I love shopping and feeling understood. I like to be around beautiful places and beautiful people. My surroundings help me express myself. To me, authenticity is recognizing myself in everything I do. Being authentic is allowing myself to evolve and shapeshift unapologetically, without ever feeling like I'm denying my values, feelings or desires.  I find beauty in nature, in words, in memories and in faces I'm proud of my friendships. I'm proud of my curiosity and excitement for my future. I try to take one deep breath a day

"The ocean and I don't innately understand one another but I find beauty in our relationship. I like being in control, and the ocean is untamable. I have never loved the ocean more than I have this summer."

CARSON @carzar36

Hi, I’m Carson Lewallen. I'm a mother, a lover of surfing, and a model with a deep passion for wellness. I live for an honest funny rant about the chaos of life.

I find beauty in the rawness of the world. Those little moments that are a little flash in our day, the ones that we feel forever but forget in seconds as time passes. The way the sunsets glows across one’s skin and the ocean, the belly laughs by a loved one, the random dance party with my family in the kitchen. Honesty and acts of kindness and humans are not scared to grow and evolve and maybe do think slightly against the grain.

Authenticity is the only way to live, and the only way of being. It is honesty in every way. If there is one thing I hope my daughter takes away from me it’s that being authentic is the MOST important thing you can do in your lifetime. It has a ripple effect of healing you and all others around you.

My proudest achievement is living my life the way I’ve always wanted it to go, always going for my dreams, and as dorky as it is MY FAMILY & being a mom is EVERYTHING to me.

"The ocean means freedom and healing to me, it makes me feel humbled, nurtured, powerful, and nostalgic all in one toe dip. Its mystery and vastness feel so much bigger than me but also part of me. It’s healed & held me in every sense of the way."

BETHANEY @beeeeeeffff

My name is Bethaney but people know me as Beef.

Sweet but spicy, weirdo, fun lover, but mostly just a goofy little nerd.

Authenticity is whatever feels good or bad and everything in between. Having the ability to not give a f*** and be true to you - as cliché as that can sound. Letting the good things come and the ability to surrender as they go.

I find beauty in people, places, sounds, a random piece of furniture, my snake and every random little creepy creature.

I am proud of how many times I’ve thrown myself into the uncomfortable and unknown and come out stronger and maybe sometimes a little wiser haha.

"The ocean is raw and powerful and gentle all at the same time. It humbles me constantly and has also been the place I’ve found the most comfort. I was born on a rock surrounded by water in the middle of the Pacific so it’s had a hold on me since day one :)"

PIPER @pipergraber_

I’m Piper, I was born and raised in San Clemente now based in East LA.

I guess I would describe authenticity as the lack of fear for what other people might think of you. Being real and honest and never not changing for anyone or any situation.

I think as you get older you really start to recognize that beauty has so much more to do with confidence than it does with any outside appearance. It’s cliché for sure but so true: the people I find myself in awe of are always the ones who seem just completely comfortable in their own skin.

When I think of things I’m proud of, I think of long term, slow and small growths. I think of getting over fears, even just small ones, as achievements. Any time I’m able to put myself into a situation that seems scary and come out okay is an achievement and usually leads to the best memories.

"The ocean is my comfort place. It’s the thing I go back to when everything else feels crazy, it always makes me feel better no matter what. If I haven’t been in the ocean in a few days I start to go crazy, the second I go in I feel normal again."
