Jeuru is nobody’s baby

On a recent sunny mid-winter Sunday in LA, a group of Submission Beauty family and friends teamed up to celebrate a true force of nature. The young singer Jeuru, born and raised in Queens, New York has been a rising star in his adopted home country of Denmark for a minute, and seeing him shine on US soil again, it’s clear that he’s ready to take over wherever he lands. We had a quick chat with him about music, style and how a change of surroundings can help you find peace in your own self. Read on below to check where Jeuru’s head is at right now.

It is easy to see that you are a very creative person, from the way you dress to the music you create. What do these forms of expression mean to you?

Music is my emotional expression/ style is the physical reflection of how I see myself in my head. Both come natural and I need to feel what I sing and wear in order to be myself 100%.

What made you take the leap of faith to completely put your focus on making music?

I decided to do music as a full time focus because everything else I did always somehow led back to it. The moment people around found out I could sing, there was no escaping their idea that I needed to go out and do this. I also felt that too but I was more scared of what came with doing music, it’s not just as simple as singing after it becomes a career.

The music industry can be a tough world to navigate, especially when trying to establish who you are. Can you tell us what the journey to finding your identity has been like?

I’ve only been on this journey full time for 3 years now- I’m super grateful to have it. I can say I’ve grown up a lot since my small debut EP but I have a long way to go. The journey to crafting sound around identity has been so challenging but at some point I know the dots will connect. The early years like with any business or career will have its trial and error moments. So I’m enjoying the early days and taking my time with understanding the changes that come along throughout my 20’s.

Do you feel that moving from New York to Copenhagen has influenced your self-perspective? If so, how has that impacted your art?

Copenhagen influenced me lifestyle wise more than I can say musically. I learned to make more room for myself in my life and I’ve learned what it means to actually be young in a way. New York made me feel like I was 40 by the time I was 21 and coming to Copenhagen, I was able to relax a little bit more inside myself. Needless to say, New York and being from NYC will always be impacting my art because it’s my roots and how I became who I am anyways.

Your music videos hold an evocative energy with an alluring flare. How much thought goes into the creative process?

I live inside my imagination a lot. I’m always dreaming up ideas even when I don’t have anything to shoot, it’s how I’ve been since I was a kid. I can say, I try to not force anything and I do think of different ways I can evolve and challenge myself creatively because I’m still learning how to be the architect of my little creative hub and trusting my artistic voice.

What can we expect from your next project?

The next project will be a mix of different elements and narratives. I tried to just put songs that captured what I went through in that specific time period. It will be some pop, Alt-R&B, Trip-Hop etc so there’s a good mix there.

“Self-Expression is important to me overall. How can it not be? I’m a being just like everyone else and we all need to bleed out our feelings somewhere.”
